About Gwen

Relationship counselling and therapy is a place to unlearn old patterns, to evolve healthier approaches and to foster authentic living.

Gwen Schauerte, Effective Therapy Toronto

Since the early 1990s, I have been a therapist, therapy group facilitator, workshop leader and clinical trainer. I have integrated approaches to psychology, adult development and healing; I define healing as “becoming your true self”. I practice mindfulness meditation and yoga. All of these enable me to listen empathetically and respond effectively. As part of my commitment to body-mind wellness, I keep active as a cyclist, hiker, jogger and dancer.

I am a member of the Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometrists and Psychotherapists and adhere to its professional code of ethics (http://www.oaccpp.ca). Also, I am a long-standing member of the West Toronto Counselling Network (www.life-issues.com).

My office is at 692 Euclid Ave in Toronto, south of Bloor and steps from Christie subway station.  Daytime and evening appointments are available.

Professional Qualifications

  • Masters of Education from the University of Toronto (Adult Education)
  • Certificates in: Trauma, Addiction, Couples Therapy and Facilitating Self-Healing
  • I have also taken numerous professional development workshops and seminars for therapists.

My approach to relationship counselling and therapy

Many clients feel anxious and unsure of how a counselling or therapy session will go. It is completely normal to feel anxious discussing subjects that are close to your heart. My approach is gentle, non-judgmental and dynamic.  I work collaboratively with clients to establish the goals for therapy. I use a range of therapeutic approaches including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Mindfulness
  • IMAGO Therapy
  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Family Systems Therapy
  • Body-Mind Integration techniques
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Grief Therapy
  • Reality Therapy
  • Solution oriented therapy

My clients report that therapy has helped them to

  • Gain clearer perspective in life
  • Experience increased confidence and self-worth
  • Feel better able to respond to life’s challenges
  • Are better able to establish healthy, balanced relationships with others
  • Feel more mature as an individual

”Gwen… consistently demonstrates compassionate listening skills as well as wisdom and an intuitive sense of what is needed in the context of the therapy process. As a woman she is impressive with her ability to empower the other women in the group and to demonstrate this in her own life and close relationships. She is also a student of yoga and is able to demonstrate her skills and knowledge in this discipline in such a way that a deeper sense of relaxation and balance is created in her students.” Dr. George Lewis, M.D., Toronto
